A 'Spot Meter' measures 'Reflected Light' but does so from a very narrow angle so you have to know a lot about 'Exposure' before using one. Powered by one AA battery, there is a ' battery check' procedure before using -- read the instructions --- then you set the ASA value of film in use and look through the viewfinder to aim the white circle 'Spot' at a tone on the subject then press a switch and the exposure scale moves and when settled gives selection of shutter speeds and apertures according to the effect you want-- a higher shutter for action or a smaller/ larger aperture for Depth of Field control.
Spot selection is 10, 6, 4 or 3 Degrees of view -- if you 'know' what is an 'average Grey Tone' of the subject you can set 10 degrees and measure that and you will get good results. Otherwise you have to measure and note readings for several areas, light and darker tones and there is a scale to help you get the 'average' reading. I normally use the 10 degree circle, but if you are taking a spotlit performer on stage against a black background then you can use the 4 or 3 degree circle to measure their face area . Before I had a 'spotmeter' I would just set some 'minus' exposure compensation on my camera and that did the same thing, usually minus 1.5 stops if I got much black background in frame . It is heavy to carry around and takes a long time to get readings if you are a hurry !
